These terms govern your use of Bug Identifier ("the App"), published by AandI Studio ("we", "us"). By installing or using the App you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the App.
Bug Identifier is an educational aid for recognising insects, arachnids and other invertebrates from photographs and sound recordings, together with a reference encyclopedia.
It is not a medical service, not a pest-control service, and not a substitute for an entomologist.
Identification is performed by machine-learning models. They are wrong sometimes, and they are wrong more often with unusual species, poor light, partial views, and anything the model was never shown. The App reports a confidence level and a shortlist rather than a single answer precisely because a single answer would overstate what it knows.
The danger information attached to a species describes that species in general, drawn from published sources. It is applied to an identification that may itself be wrong, and it is not medical advice. If you have been bitten or stung and feel unwell, contact a doctor or your local emergency number. Do not use this App to decide whether something is safe to touch, eat, or leave near a child.
Do not rely on the App where a mistake would matter: allergy management, treatment decisions, pest control, agriculture, conservation work, or anything with legal or commercial consequence.
You must be old enough to form a binding contract where you live, or have the consent of a parent or guardian. If you are under 13, please use the App with an adult.
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the App on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial purposes. You may not copy, sell, rent, reverse-engineer or redistribute the App or the models inside it, except where that restriction is void under law that applies to you.
The photographs and recordings you make remain yours. They are processed on your device and are not uploaded to us — see the Privacy Policy. We claim no licence over them, because we never receive them.

The App is built on work published by other people, and every piece of it is named here. All of it belongs to its authors and remains under its own licence.
Species are recognised from photographs by BioCLIP, a vision model published by the Imageomics Institute (Stevens, Wu, Thompson, Campolongo, Song, Carlyn, Dong, Dahdul, Stewart, Berger-Wolf, Chao and Su, CVPR 2024). Model weights and code are licensed MIT, and the TreeOfLife dataset it was trained on is released into the public domain under CC0.
The model runs on your device. The list of species it can name is prepared at build time from scientific names, which are facts and carry no licence.
Insect song is recognised by BirdNET+ V3.0, developed by the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology together with Chemnitz University of Technology, and licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. The model is used unmodified; the App reports only the insects and arachnids among the classes it knows.
Common names, photographs, descriptions and taxonomy come from the iNaturalist public API and from its contributors. Individual photographs carry their own Creative Commons licences, which vary from one observation to the next and belong to the photographers who took them.
Species descriptions and the links beneath them come from Wikipedia, licensed CC BY-SA 4.0 by its contributors. Where an article exists in your language, the App links to that one rather than to the English original.
